ALGAE ADVANTAGES Sustainable production of energy and biofuels, in the form of biodiesel from algae is considered the Holy Grail of alternative energy, for a number of reasons:

  • Algae are the only feedstock that has the potential to produce enough oil to completely replace the world's consumption of fossil fuels.
  • They have a much higher photosynthesis efficiency and faster growth rate than any agricultural plants.
  • The yields of oil from algae are much higher than competing energy crops by a factor of 30 and higher.
  • Algae can grow practically anywhere, thus ensuring that there is no competition with food crops.
  • Algae are excellent bioremediation agents and play an important role in waste treatment.
  • They grow to produce high amounts of biomass and in doing so absorb massive amounts of CO2.
  • Algae are already being used in a wide variety of industries and applications, and many newer applications are being discovered.  Algae are used in everything from cleaning the atmosphere of GHG to producing vitamins and nutritional supplements.  Such a wide range of end-uses enable companies to produce both fuels and non-fuel products from the same algae feedstock.
  • Although our focus will be on commodity priced transportation fuels, highly processed algae oil used for nutricitricals can command as much as $192.00 per gallon. (National Algae Association Conference, Las Vegas, February 2010) and as a dry product in the nutritional industry, which command over $23,000/ton retail.

When transportation fuels are compared side-by-side, algae oil-derived fuels offer significant economic, ecological, and safety advantages over petroleum and corn based ethanol.
